Last week sensitisation around the Lean Season Response started in the district of Phalombe.
The Ministry of Gender, Community Development & Social Welfare (MoGCDSW) and the Phalombe Full Council had a meeting to discuss and sensitise participants about the Lean Season Response.
The Lean Season Response is a project enacted yearly by the Government of Malawi to support families with the period between planting seeds and harvesting, when food is short, and prices of maize rise as a result. This results in many ultra-poor households skipping meals.
The 2022 Lean Season Response in Phalombe will target 10,208 households, including all 7,994 Social Cash Transfer Programme (SCTP) household beneficiaries through Vertical Expansion (VE).
The VE in Phalombe is funded by the German Government through KfW to the tune of K292,650,480.00 (EURO 319,487).
In Phalombe, households will receive 18,000 MWK per month for two months – January and February 2022.
Other districts implementing the Lean Season Response with funding from the German Government through KfW are Machinga and Mangochi.
Districts of Nsanje, Neno and Chikwawa will implement the response with funding from the European Union (EU), while districts of Balaka and Ntcheu will implement the response with finding from Irish Aid.
